Internships for Secondary School Teachers

The University of South Carolina is offering two eight-week summer research internships for secondary school science teachers. Summer research internships provide teachers with the opportunity to be part of an active research program. In addition, they establish working relationships with members of a USC faculty and staff who can make school visits or answer questions during the school year. The primary goal of the internships will be a high quality research project conducted during eight weeks in the laboratory of his/her mentor. To accomplish this goal, the teachers will need a combination of knowledge, intellectual exchange, and hands on experience that will be provided buy the mentor and members of the mentor’s research group.

At the end of the summer, the teachers will present a summary of their research projects in a departmental minisymposium and write a report of their work for their mentor and Dr. Ely. In addition, the teachers will be asked to write a lesson plan for one of their classes that incorporates something they learned during their internship. Once their lesson plan is finalized, the teachers will be allotted up to $500 to purchase laboratory supplies for their classroom. Stipends for the internship will be $4000 with an additional $1000 after successful implementation of the lesson plan during the subsequent school year.

To apply, send Dr. Ely an e-mail (ely@sc.edu) containing your contact information, a resume and a paragraph describing why you are interested in working in a research laboratory.
