Natural Areas

Besides the Hobcaw Barony, other natural areas exist for investigators
including an area of seven acres owned by the University within the
City of Columbia, approximately 3 miles from
campus. The Congaree Swamp National Monument, a spectacular
example of pristine bald cypress swamp, is only 10 miles from
campus and affords superb research possibilities. Additionally
the State of South Carolina has many parks and natural areas
which cover all major terrestrial and marine habitats of the
Southeast. The University is within a few hours drive of the
Great Smokey Mountains National Park as well as the Savannah
River Ecology Laboratory located on 250,000 acres with riverine,
lake, upland forest, swamp and stream habitats under natural or
thermally stressed conditions.
