Computer Resources in Biological Sciences

Research Laboratories
All department research laboratories contain at least one Windows XP or Windows 2000 computer. In addition, there are laboratories with Macintosh and a variety of Unix computers. All Biology laboratories are connected to 100 Mb Ethernet which, in turn, connects by fibre to the USC campus network backbone and the Internet.

Departmental Resources
Electronic mail is provided by a server in the Department of Biological Sciences. All Biology servers run on Redhat Linux. The Biological Sciences WWW system is hosted on a Redhat Enterprise 4 Linux system. The GCG package for molecular genetic analysis is provided for common use by the Department on a Silicon Graphics Irix computer. A number of imaging workstations (Pentium 4 running Windows 2000 or XP Pro) with scanner, color printer, slidemaker, and image manipulation software is available for common use within the department. Photographic-quality color printers are also available. Mac workstations are also available

Support for Departmental computing is provided by a full-time Systems Administrator. In addition, imaging systems are also supported by a graphics staff member.

Teaching Resources
The Department of Biological sciences maintains two computer-equipped teaching laboratories, each with 8 Windows XP Pro workstations. One is oriented towards ecological sciences and data analysis; the other is equipped with analog/digital hardware and software from National Instruments in support of neurobiology or other instrument-based courses.

In addition, there are numerous computer laboratories in Coker Life Science and neighboring buildings that are maintained by the College of Arts and Sciences. These contain a wide variety of computers including Pentium 4 Windows XP Pro systems, Silicon Graphics Irix systems, Macintoshes, and other computers.

A computer- and video-projection lecture hall is available in Coker Life Sciences Building. It is equipped with a networked Pentium 4 workstation running Windows XP Pro, and can also be driven with a Windows or Mac laptop.

Campus Resources
Computer Services at USC supports a wide variety of campus-wide computing resources. All undergraduates, graduate students, staff, and faculty are entitled to a campus mainframe email account. The University has arranged site-licenses and discounts for a range of software. The campus is well on in its goal to network all undergraduate residence halls.
