College of Arts & Sciences
Department of Biological Sciences

Ph.D. / M.S. Research Program

The Department offers research based Doctoral and Master's Degrees.  Students work under the guidance and supervision of a professor, with the additional guidance of a faculty supervisory committee, take courses as appropriate, and develop and execute a body of research which results in a Dissertation (Ph.D.) or Thesis (M.S.).  Because of the extraordinary breadth of Biology, the faculty are loosely organized in three general areas (below).  However, faculty interests and activities often integrate multiple and diverse research themes; our link to Research Areas describes the general research activities of our main Departmental Research Groups (IB, MCDB and Plant), as well as specific research interests of indivual faculty.  If you are a prospective student, please use these links to review your research opportunities with us.

If you are currently a USC Undergraduate participating in research with a Biology professor, you might be interested in our "Accelerated Bachelor's/Graduate Study Program", which allows you to continue your research allowing you to continue your research experience one more year, and earn a Masters Degree (M.S.) in Biological Science.  Click HERE for more information.
