Peromyscus Genetics

The goal of Dr. Szalai's research is the development and study of genetic models affecting developmental, physiological, and behavioral processes. Useful genetic variation is identified through the traditional analyses of naturally occurring variant phenotypes in Peromyscus including epilepsy, susceptibility to cancer, etc.

Current projects in the laboratory include:

Development of an intermediate density genetic map in deer mice (Peromyscus), relying heavily on PCR based genetic markers. Such a map will considerably enhance the usefulness of deer mice in a variety of research areas including speciation, behavior, and habitat variation.

Development of cryopreservation techniques for Peromyscus including sperm and embryo freezing and artificial insemination.
