Comparative Angiosperm Embryology and Phylogeny, Botanical History, Floristics

Dr. Rembert's research interests have ranged over a variety of botanical subjects. Initial interest in the early events in seed development led to a series of publications emphasizing various aspects of megagametophyte morphology and phylogeny in legumes. This led to a consideration of surface topography studies of developmental stages of ovules utilizing the scanning electron microscope. In concert with developmental stages of the megagametophyte, the unique three dimensional features of scanning electron microscopy help give a clearer picture of seed development in angiosperms.

More recently, interests have turned to the 18th century for a better understanding of botanical activities through an understanding of history. Commercial crops such as indigo have been studied as well as historic botanical collections, historic gardens, and the lives of botanical explorers. Southeastern colonial botanists, their lives and their plants are subjects of future research.

Current status of species distribution in South Carolina is a continuing interest. Various taxonomic questions are being investigated through the A. C. Moore Herbarium in our Department where Dr. Rembert serves as Director.
