NAWIN C. MISHRA, PhD, is an Emeritus Professor of Molecular Genetics and Genomics in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Mishra was the member of Biology faculty 1973-2006 first as Associate Professor and later as Full Professor and Distinguished Professor He was also involved with Dept of Microbiology at the USC medical school first as Ad-hoc Chair of the dept during its formation year and later as adjunct faculty .
He received his B.Sc ( Hons) and M.Sc. from Science college , Patna University and his Ph. D from the McMaster University , Hamilton , Ont. Canada in 1967. He was a merit scholar at the University of Patna and a Fellow of the Government of Ontario at the McMaster University.
He received his Postdoctoral training 1967-1973 with the late Nobel laureate Professor E. L. Tatum at the Rockefeller University in New York; there he initiated the landmark gene transfer experiments in fungi With Professor Tatum at the Rockefeller University (1967-1973). At the Rockefeller University he was the recipient of Fellowship for Medical Research of the Jane Coffin Child Fund of the Yale University.
Later he worked on various aspects of gene transfer and the characterization of nuclease and DNA polymerase mutants with altered exonuclease activity in eukaryotes.
Professor Mishra has served as:
The Chairman of the Program Committee of the Genetics Society of America;
A scientific consultant to the FAO of the United Nations during 1990s;
He also served on the review panel of the Human Genome Project for the United States DOE in mid 1990s.
He has been elected Fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science since 1986 for the landmark experiment on Gene transfer in Neurospora with Professor Tatum .
He is the recipient of Jewels of India / Hind Rattan Award 2014.
Dr. Mishra has given invited lectures in Australia, UK, EU, Russia, Japan , Thailand , India and China . In May 1980 he was sent by the Rockefeller Foundation to Beijing China among a group of 10 US Scientists including several Nobel Laureates to give lectures in a symposium on Molecular Biology : This was the first group of American Scientists sent to China when China became open to west .
Dr. Mishra has trained a large number of Ph.D. students and Post Doctoral fellows that are now members of the faculty in academics and industries in Americas , India and elsewhere.
Dr. Mishra has successfully organized two conferences of International nature at the University of South Carolina in Columbia : First in 1978 for the Genetics Society of America and Second the Fungal genetics Congress in 1986.
He has published several articles in prominent research journals, including Nature, the Proceedings of the United States National Academy of Sciences, Genetics and Nucleic Acids Research
He has also published two books; First, The Molecular Biology of Nucleases ( two editions of this book ) and
Second, Introduction to Proteomics with a Foreword by Nobel laureate Professor Gunter Blobel of the Rockefeller University published by John Wiley of New York .
