Phylogeny, Systematics and Diversity of Diptera

My research focus is Diptera (commonly known as flies), which is one of the most successful and diverse orders of insects and accounts for a significant percentage of global biodiversity. Species of Diptera are found on all continents, and Diptera is one of the few insect orders found in Antarctica. Ecological diversity among Diptera species, especially in the larval stage, allows them to thrive in a wide range of habitats from rain forests and deserts to tar pits, salt lakes, and hot water pools. Although they have an important role in ecosystem functioning as decomposers and pollinators, they also have a major impact on human health and agriculture as vectors of diseases and crop pests. One of the major aims of my research is to identify underlying patterns of global and regional diversity in Diptera and test phylogenetic hypotheses proposed for these evolutionary radiations. My recent studies have involved detailed examination of the Diptera fossil record, taxonomic descriptions of new species and genera, and molecular phylogenetic analyses of higher-level taxonomic groups. These findings have improved divergence time estimates and Southern Hemisphere biogeographic hypotheses for ancient (late Jurassic) fly lineages.
