My research interests lie in the area of plant cell structure, physiology, cellular and structural aspects of plant-virus interaction. I am currently using plant (tobacco and Arabidopsis) and turnip vein clearing virus (TVCV) interaction as a model system to study the mechanism of virus systemic movement process. In plants, the plasmodesmata are the intrercellular connections that play a major role in cell-cell communication. Many plant viruses can increase size exclusion limits of plasmodesmata to gain entry to the cells and eventually establish disease. In an infected leaf, virus first moves from cell-to-cell in mesophyll tissue and eventually to major and minor veins where the virus gains access to the phloem. It is critical for the virus to gain access to the veins to establish a systemic movement. It has already been shown that in Arabidopsis, TVCV enters the veins from mesophyll cells and then follows the assimilate flow from source to sink tissue resulting in systemic infection. We are currently using various microscopic tools to understand the mechanism of viral movement in plants that includes identifying host factor(s) involved in blockage of virus systemic movement. This information will help us to develop plants that are resistant to viral infection.
