Students choose advisory committees that oversee their course requirements, training, and progress towards their degree. While the graduate program is formally structured regarding student requirements, these requirements can be readily modified to meet specific needs of the student in consultation with the student's faculty mentor and committee.

The department hosts a weekly seminar series with visiting speakers as well as in specialty seminars in their respective areas.

The M.A.T. and I.M.A. degrees are also offered, in cooperation with the College of Education, for students whose primary goal is to teach biology at the secondary level.
