A comparison between miscellaneous 6.0 liter V12 parts & 5.3 liter V12 Parts

On the left is the oil pump from a 6.0 Liter. On the right is one from a 5.3 Liter.
The 6.0 Liter follower on the left is considerably lighter than the 5.3 L follower on the right.

The 6.0 oil pump runs on a crankshaft cam.
The 5.3 liter oil pump runs on a gear. This picture happens to be from a custom stroker crank.

On the left, a 6.0 L piston. On the right, one from a 5.3 L.

The design of the piston & location of the wrist pin is different.

This 5.3 L piston has been lightened.

The 6.0 L piston (90 degrees rotated to the 5.3 on the right) does not seem to have the expansion control inserts.
Here, the heat expansion control inserts in a 5.3 L piston are illustrated.

A 6.0 L timing cover with crank pickup tab on the left & a 5.3 Liter timing cover on the right
The backside of each timing cover. The 6.0 on the left (50,000 mi) was running synthetic oil.

The 6.0 L block is identical to 5.3 L blocks with a one piece rear seal. Here, a 5.3 L oil pump is bolted up to a 6.0 block.
Another view of the 6.0 L pump. Sorry.. no interior view planned.

The back of the 6.0 L block. Only two bolts normally match up to the chevy pattern.
The valve spring retainer for the 6.0 on the left & the one for the 5.3on the right.

The spring 6.0 spring retainer has a different tappet than the 5.3.
In order to use the lighter 6.0 follower, the 6.0 tappets and spring retainers must also be used. (5.3 retainer pictured with 6.0 tappet)

The 5.3 wrist pin up top & the 6.0 (shorter & lighter) below.
The 1000 +/- gram connecting rod is common between the 6.0 L & 5.3L. Chevy con rods may be adapted to fit w/ piston mods.

Additional notes. The 5.3L liter heads are pretty much identical to the 6.0 L heads except that the 6.0 uses metric bolts/studs. Turning a 5.3 into a 6.0 would require a 5.3 block with a 1 piece rear seal, the 6.0 crank (the oil pump from either could probably be adapted as the gear is pressed on,) the 6.0 pistons (or custom pistons,) the proper balancer, and that's it (for simply creating an engine of 6.0 liters capacity.)

Special thanks to Chad Bolles of Jaguar South for pictures of his 6.0

His asked me to note that stroker crank (stroked 5.3) with a custom piston set (all perfectly balanced & lightened) are for sale.
