Baruch
Symposium
The Graduate Student Symposium at Baruch is a yearly meeting hosted by GABS. It is open to anyone, regardless of department, who is conducting biologically related research. Students from Biology, Chemistry, Marine Science and MERM have attended. The purpose of the syposium is to encourage scientific exchange among graduate students in a casual environment. Because of the relaxed, "students only" atmosphere, it is a great place for students to present their work before taking it on the road to the next big meeting. Here they can get feedback on their work as well as learn about other biology research at USC. There is also a chance at several awards for outstanding talks such as the Robert Sanders Memorial Best Student Paper Award.
The syposium is held all day Saturday with guests spending both Friday and Saturday night at the Baruch Marine Field Laboratory near Georgetown, SC. There is plenty of time for socializing both before and after the talks with many people taking excursions to nearby beaches, tidal marshes, abandoned rice fields and more. All food, beverages, transportation and housing are provided for the students, wether they present or not. Thanks to generous contributions in the past from the College of Science and Mathematics, the Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences, the Marince Science Program, the Department of Biology, GABS and the Marine Science Graduate Student Association, no one has had to pay to attend the syposium yet.
