FAMILY AMEIRIDAE

General Notes

1.         A note of caution:

It is probable that the descriptions of some (but not all) species of Ameira, Pseudameira and perhaps other related genera are incorrect. Lang (1965) reports the presence of a weak third seta on the inner border of P.2-P.4 Exp.3 in some species of Ameira and Moore (1976) has discovered that the Exp. A.2 in some species of Ameira and Pseudameira has 2 segs. and not the single segment as often described.

2.            Revisions and redescriptions.

The latest revision is by Lang (1948) but Lang (1965) revises several genera and adds other valuable comments.

Pseudoleptomesochrella incerta is transferred to this genus from Paraleptastacus (Family Cylindropsyllidae) by Moore (1975).

Parevansula Guille & Soyer is removed from the Family Cylindropsyllidae by Moore (1976) who also considers that Philoleptomesochra Wells is a synonym.

Variability in Psyllocamptus minutus is discussed by Wells & McKenzie (1973) and Moore (1976).

Ameira pusilla redescibed by Bodin (1977)

3.            Synonymies:

Philoleptomesochra a synonym of Parevansula, by Moore (1976).

Ameira parvuloides may be a synonym of A. parvula; see Moore (1976).

Ameira longifurca may be a synonym of A. tenella; see Moore (1976).

4.         In addition to those cited in the keys these species are not included in the catalogues of Lang and Bodin:

Parapseudoleptomesochra trisetosa waltairensis Rao & Ganapati, 1969b.

Paraleptomesochra wellsi Rao, 1972.

Nitocrella hirta bucarestensis Damian & Botosaneanu, 1955, hirta tirolensis Kiefer, 1963, hirta caucasica Borutzky, 1967.

Ameira listensis Mielke, 1973.

Parevansula vermiformis Moore, 1976.

5.         The male of these species has now been described:

Ameira hyalina and listensis, by Mielke, 1975, tenuicornis, by Wells, 1961.

Interleptomesochra tenuicornis, by Vilela, 1965.

Nitocrella elegans and gracilis, by Rouch, 1964.

Pseudameira crassicornis, by Moore, 1976, Bodin 1977.

6.         The genus Nitocrella, Nitocrella, Stygonitocrella, Parapseudoleptomesochra contains many purely freshwater species.
